Good: There is one basic secret to dealing with informants. You’ve got to give them respect. No matter what they might have done in the past, they are still human beings. These people have pride. To be called a stool pigeon, a canary, a fink is demeaning. They know what the words mean. They have to know that you are sincere, that you will keep your promises, that you value what they are doing. There’s a chemistry to the relationship. It has to be based on mutual trust. They have to know that you won’t let them down as long as they follow the ground rules, and the ground rules have to be clear from the beginning of the relationship. There are times when you have to bend a little with them, be a little flexible. This doesn’t mean that you condone anything improper, but you have to understand that they are going against their basic nature when they cooperate with law enforcement. It isn’t easy for them and they don’t approach situations with your moral and professional point of view. You have to understand that they come from a different world with different codes of behavior.
Mel was that way too, although he was far more than an informant. In the beginning, we had some battles. But we got it all straightened out. Without Mel Weinberg, there would be no Abscam. He was the heart and soul of it. He styled it and made it come down. He was incredible.
Weinberg: In the beginnin’, I had some problems with John Good. I didn’t know him that good. When I got to know him, it was different. He fought like hell for me; he made me feel like I was part of the team with him and Tony and the rest of them. John Good would give me the shirt offa his back, and I’d go to hell and back for him. That’s the way it is with John and me.
